On November 4, I’ll be turning 42.
And while I don’t necessarily feel very different from the person I was 5 years ago, I know that when I look at photos of myself from that time, I can see how much has changed.
The older I get, the more I notice that life doesn’t always unfold the way I imagined it would.
If you have kids, you probably know what I mean. There’s always something changing, always something to figure out. One moment you think you’ve found your rhythm, and the next something shifts and you’re figuring it all out again.
5 years ago, we moved from the Netherlands to Spain.
Back then, I imagined that by now life would feel more settled. Our house would be organized, there would be art hanging on our walls, and somehow we’d have everything a little more figured out.
But here I am, still waiting for some of those things to happen. Still thinking that one day, when life feels a little less chaotic, I’ll finally get around to them.
As a photographer, I see this all the time.
Families waiting for the perfect moment, when everyone is a little older, life is a little calmer, or things feel more organized. Women building businesses who feel they need to have everything together before they deserve to be photographed.
But what if this moment, exactly as it is, is already worth remembering?
I believe we need to see ourselves in every chapter of our lives, not just the ones where we feel like we’ve arrived.
At 42, I don’t have everything figured out. There are still things I’m dreaming about, learning, and building.
And I also want to celebrate where I am today.
The family we’ve created. The people who make my life richer. And the work that allows me to witness so many beautiful, ordinary moments in other people’s lives.
Because I know that five years from now, I’ll look back at photos of this time and see things I couldn’t quite see while I was living it.
